Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi addressed concerns about the unity of the national cricket team ahead of the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup. He confidently dismissed any notions of discord within the squad, emphasizing that every player is committed to winning the prestigious tournament next month.

Afridi’s comments come in the wake of significant changes in the team’s leadership. He was appointed as the T20I captain after Babar Azam stepped down following Pakistan’s underwhelming performances in last year’s Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the ODI World Cup held in India. However, Afridi’s captaincy was short-lived, ending in March 2024 after Pakistan suffered a 4-1 series defeat against New Zealand in T20Is.

The return of Babar Azam as captain was marred by controversial statements that sparked a debate about the lack of unity within the team. However, Afridi, speaking on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s podcast, sought to dispel these rumors.

“If there are ever small misunderstandings, these happen in every family,” Afridi remarked. “And when there are brothers, they sometimes have disagreements over little things. But thankfully, there is nothing like that in this team.”

He continued, “Our effort is always to play with unity. This is not the time for arguments or discord. Everyone needs to be involved in one process, moving together with unity toward achieving the same goal.”

Afridi also shared an update on his health, confirming that he had fully recovered from the injury that had previously sidelined him. He expressed optimism and determination, saying, “It is our job to play cricket and bring joy to our nation.”

With a smile, Afridi addressed the team’s aspirations, “We are also tired of telling people that we will win the World Cup. But God willing, this time we will make this happen.”

Afridi’s words reflect a strong sense of solidarity and shared purpose within the Pakistani cricket team as they prepare for the World Cup, aiming to bring home the title and uplift the spirits of their fans.
