A tweet by a senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Tuesday gave credence to the reports that Jahangir Khan Tareen is going to quit the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of Prime Minister Imran Khan and join the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his father, former president Asif Ali Zardari.
In a tweet on Tuesday, PPP leader Syeda Shehla Raza said that Jahangir Tareen, estranged PTI leader and previously a close confidante of Prime Minister Imran Khan, was holding meetings with the PPP leadership and was probably going to quit the PTI soon. She said that Jahangir Tareen held a meeting with PPP leader Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood and that he would hold a meeting with PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi next week.
Shehla, provincial minister for women’s development and former deputy speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, said that Jahangir Tareen was probably going to join the PPP at the upcoming meeting along with his companions. If it happens, she said, neither Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar nor Prime Minister Imran Khan would survive in power.
Jahangir Tareen however was quick to come forward and issue a denial. He denied that he was in touch with PPP leaders or was going to join the Sindh-based party. Reacting to Shehla Raza’s tweet, Jahangir Tareen said that a malicious campaign was being run against him on the social media. He said that reports of his meeting with the PPP leader were baseless and those behind these reports would be disappointed.
