LAHORE – Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday announced the date for winter vacation at schools and colleges across the province.

After chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Standing Committee on Smog, Naqvi announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, “We held a meeting with experts and govt officials today addressing the SMOG challenge in Punjab. With an improved Air Quality Index (AQI), no restrictions are planned for the upcoming weekend. Additionally, winter vacations for children will commence from Dec 18 , 2023 to Jan 1, 2024.”

Also, the caretaker Punjab chief minister said there would be no smog-related restrictions in the province this weekend keeping in view the improved air quality in the province. This means schools and colleges will remain open on Friday and Saturday and there will be no closure of businesses over the weekend.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Cabinet Standing Committee on Smog that discussed the situation in the smog-affected districts, including Lahore.

Last week, the Punjab government announced that schools would remain closed in Lahore and nine other districts of the province on Friday and Saturday due to the ongoing smog crisis. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said there would be “restricted movement” in the smog-hit divisions.

It was decided that all public and private schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions would remain closed on Friday and Saturday in Lahore and its six divisions. It said that all markets, shops and and restaurants would open after 3pm on both the days.

On November 23, the Punjab government had announced closure of all schools in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Sahiwal and Sargodha Divisions on Friday and Saturday due to acute smog in these regions of the province. Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi had made this announcement while talking to the media in Lahore.
