Asad Umar, the federal minister for planning, development, reforms and special initiatives, made this announcement via Twitter on Wednesday.

Pakistan on Wednesday opened vaccine registration for people aged 19 and above from May 27.

Asad Umar, the federal minister for planning, development, reforms and special initiatives, made this announcement via Twitter on Wednesday after a meeting of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

He wrote, “In today’s NCOC meeting we decided to open up vaccination registration for all 19 years and above. This registration will start from tomorrow. So now registration will be open for the entire national population which is approved by health experts for covid vaccination.”

As the third wave of the pandemic hit Pakistan in March this year, the number of infections went considerably up. Consequently, the government had to impose restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. However, as a result of the nationwide lockdowns, the number of infections decreased gradually.

According to the statistics released by the NCOC on May 26, Pakistan conducted 59,076 tests in 24 hours. As a result of these tests, 2,724 people’s tests came back positive. At least 65 coronavirus patients died across Pakistan in 24 hours, the NCOC reported.

Despite a fall in infections in the country, Pakistan is trying to vaccinate its people as quickly as possible. According to the statistics provided by the NCOC on May 25, 268,236 people were administered vaccine across Pakistan on May 24. The total number of people who were administered vaccine until May 24 stands at 5,843,059.

Pakistan started vaccinating its people against the deadly coronavirus in March this year. Initially, the NCOC decided to allow people aged 70 and above, who registered themselves on the helpline 1166, to walk into any vaccination centre and get vaccinated against Covid-19.
