SIALKOT – Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that Pakistan is not at the risk of going bankrupt; it has already defaulted.

Speaking at a public event in his hometown, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader said, “We are living in a country, which has defaulted, and the establishment, bureaucracy and politicians are responsible for the current situation.” He said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could not solve Pakistan’s problems; solution to Pakistan’s problems lies within Pakistan.

The defence minister said that golf clubs were occupying 1,400-1,500 kanals of state land and the government could pay off at least 25 percent of Pakistan’s debt by selling just two of these golf clubs. He said that he has seen Pakistani rulers begging for as low an amount as $200 million or $300 million since he has been accompanying them to talks.

He said that poor people’s houses are demolished in Pakistan to help the real estate mafia make money.

Referring to a recent incident in the federal capital Islamabad, Asif said a leopard killed a man in a residential area in Islamabad but no one had the courage to name the person who was keeping that leopard in his house. He said that an FIR was registered against an anonymous man instead of naming the real owner of the leopard. He said this is the state of the rule of law in Pakistan.

According to some social media users, a retired general of the Pakistan Army was keeping the leopard at his house in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) neighbourhood of Islamabad in violation of the law. However, there was no independent or official confirmation of this information shared by some social media users.

The defence minister said that he has seen degradation in politics in this country for the last 32 years. He said that those who raised voice against these humiliating conditions were sent into exile or imprisoned in Pakistan.

He said that none other than Pakistani politicians were responsible for the advent of terrorism in Pakistan. He said that 230 million people of Pakistan were made scapegoats to save a few thousand people.
