ISLAMABAD — Pakistan is celebrating its 76th Independence Day today (Sunday) with traditional zeal and fervour.

To commemorate 75 years of independence from the British rule, the Pakistani government organised ceremonies across the country.

In Islamabad, the day dawned with a 31-gun salute, while 21-gun salute ceremonies were held in the provincial capitals.

Addressing a flag-hoisting ceremony at Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad on the Independence Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to transform Pakistan into an economic power.

Sharif, who is president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), laid stress on the need for a national dialogue on a charter of economy to make Pakistan an economic power.

“If we can become a nuclear power, we can also become an economic power but for it we have to strive day and night and prove to the world that we are no less than anyone,” the prime minister said.

“The Pakistan Movement is a lesson for everyone,” he said, adding that no hurdle could deter a nation from achieving its goals once it decides its path.
