LAHORE – Pakistani fashion designer Khadijah Shah said on Friday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Yasmin Rashid was critically ill in jail.
Yasmin Rashid, who served as health minister of Punjab under the PTI government from 2018 to 2022, is suffering from cancer. She has been arrested multiple times in connection with May 9 riots, which broke out across Pakistan after former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested by the paramilitary force called Rangers on the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Khadijah Shah too has been arrested for her alleged role in the May 9 riots in Lahore. Punjab Police have dubbed Khadijah Shah as “mastermind of the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander’s House,” but she denies the charges.
During her appearance in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday, Khadijah Shah got an opportunity to respond to media persons who asked her about her health and that if she was subjected to any kind of torture in the jail. Ignoring what she was asked about, Khadijah Shah said, “Dr Yasmin Rashid had been critically ill last night. Raise your voice for her. She is an elderly woman and she is a very brave woman. She has been critically ill in jail.”
On Thursday, the LHC had expressed its displeasure with the police failure to produce Shah in the court after expiry of her judicial remand. The court ordered the police to produce her on Friday. A two-member bench of the LHC headed by Justice Shahbaz Rizvi heard the petition filed by Khadijah Shah’s father, former finance minister Salman Shah, and her husband Jahanzeb Amin.
