ISLAMABAD – The federal government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reportedly decided to take legal action against the top leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to the latest reports surfacing in the Pakistani media, the federal government has sought Law Ministry’s opinion on its plan of action.
Unnamed sources in the federal government have been quoted as saying by the Pakistani media that legal action will be taken on the basis of available evidence and advice of the Law Ministry. PTI Chairman Imran Khan and some key leaders of his party can be arrested under this plan, reports say.
Khan has been up in arms against the coalition government led by Sharif and Pakistan’s military establishment since April 10 when he was removed from power through a vote of no-confidence.
The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of 13 political parties, had filed the no-confidence motion against Khan and removed him as prime minister of Pakistan after three-and-a-half-years in office.
Khan was marching on Islamabad as part of his party’s efforts to push the government to call early elections, but his anti-government rally was disrupted by a gun attack in the Punjab town of Wazirabad on November 3. Khan received four bullets to his legs and was shifted to Shaukat Khaunum Hospital in Lahore immediately after the incident. At least 10 other people were wounded in the attack and one of his supporters was killed.

A day after he came under attack, Khan said in his televised address to the nation from the hospital bed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan and Major General Faisal Naseer of the Pakistan Army were behind the plot to kill him.
Reacting to Khan’s statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), media wing of the Pakistan Army, rejected the allegations against the senior army officer as “unacceptable and uncalled for”.
Also, there are reports that the Interior Ministry headed by Rana Sanaullah Khan has directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take action against the PTI leadership for levelling “baseless” allegations against senior officers of the Pakistan Army.
In this regard, law and defence ministries will submit their advices to the prime minister today.
