ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan said on Sunday the government had given the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) a go-ahead to arrest former finance minister Shaukat Tareen.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday evening, Rana Sanaullah Khan said Tarin would be punished for what he did. Tarin has been accused of trying to derail Pakistan’s talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for revival of the loan programme.
A day earlier, the FIA had sought the Interior Ministry’s approval to begin legal proceedings and eventually arrest Tarin for allegedly sabotaging negotiations between Pakistan and the IMF.
The FIA has completed an investigation into Tarin’s leaked audios involving the former Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa finance ministers. The FIA initiated an inquiry into the matter last year after the alleged telephonic conversations between Tarin and the two provincial finance ministers surfaced.
