ISLAMABAD — A leaked audio of an alleged conversation between Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a senior government officer is making rounds on the internet.
In the leaked audio, the ‘government officer’ is briefing ‘Shehbaz Sharif’ about some ‘requests’, which have come from Maryam Nawaz, niece of the incumbent prime minister and daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
In the audio, the ‘government officer’ is briefing ‘Shehbaz Sharif’ about Maryam Nawaz’s ‘request’ to have the prime minister allow her son-in-law Raheel Munir to import a power plant from India.
The ‘government officer’ informs the ‘prime minister’ that there would be a strong reaction if Maryam Nawaz’s son-in-law is given permission to import the power plant from India. He says it will be difficult to handle this issue since it will first go to the ECC (Economic Coordination Committee) and then the federal cabinet. He says this decision will become a trouble for the government.

Responding to the ‘government officer’s’ point of view, the ‘prime minister’ tells the officer to inform Maryam Nawaz politely about the situation and then he will make her understand.
The allegedly officer says that Maryam Nawaz had assigned him two tasks. One was about installation of a grid station in a housing society and that is being done.

In response, ‘Shehbaz Sharif’ says this task can be done in a natural way, but bringing machinery from India will be difficult. It can’t be done even secretly; it will become a problem if discussed in ECC, he says.
Quoting journalist Amir Ilyas Rana and another journalist, the ‘government officer’ informed the ‘prime minister’ that he was going to repeat the same mistake in appointment of Justice Maqbool Baqar that he made in the appointment of Justice Javed Iqbal. Therefore, the officer said, the prime minister should give it a thorough consideration before making a final decision.
The spokesperson for the federal government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has yet to comment on the leaked audio.
