PESHAWAR – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur announced on Friday that the provincial government would restore the Health card in the province from the first of the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking at a press conference in the provincial capital, Gandapur said that people would have the facility of treatment for all diseases across the board using the Health Card. He said some hospitals did not meet the criteria for treatment through Health Card therefore the government would issue a new list showing which government and private hospitals would offer treatment through Health Card.

The new-elected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister said the government would help the deserving people in Ramadan in a transparent manner. Using the data available with the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and Ehsaas Programme, he said the government would give Rs10,000 each to one million families in the holy month of Ramadan. He said the government was doling out this money in cash because it had a bad experience of dealing with distribution of grants in the past.

Health Card, an initiative of the previous government led by the former prime minister Imran Khan to provide free treatment to the poor people nationwide, was blocked by the caretaker government after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) dissolved its government in the province prematurely.

Gandapur, a member of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s party, was elected the Chief Minister of the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on March 1, 2024.

Newly-elected speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Babar Saleem Swati, who took oath on Thursday, presided over the assembly session. In the 106-member house, PTI-backed Gandapur bagged 90 votes against his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) rival Dr Ibadullah Khan, who got only 16 votes.
