LONDON – Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday. She was 96.

According to the official Twitter account of The Royal Family, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Born in Mayfair, London, on April 21, 1926 as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, Elizabeth II was the Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive.

Earlier on Wednesday, The Queen was put under medical supervision after her doctors expressed concerns about her health condition.

Over her 70-year-long reign, The Queen oversaw an extraordinary period of British history, including decolonisation and the independence of more than 20 countries that were once a part of the British Empire. Charles, 73, is now Britain’s king.

Liz Truss, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party, offered her condolences over the death of The Queen.
