Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and a former president of Pakistan, made history on Saturday as he became the first Pakistani to be elected the president of the country for the second time.
The announcement was made by Zardari’s son and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari via an X. According to the X post shared by Bilawal, Zardari secure 411 votes while his opponent Mahmood Khan Achakzai got 181 votes. According to the details shared by Bilawal, Zardari got 17 vote in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, while Achakzai secured 91 votes. One vote was rejected here. In the Punjab Assembly, Zardari got 246 votes and Achakzai obtained 100 votes. Six votes were rejected. In Sindh Assembly, Zardari got 151 votes and Achakzai won 9 votes. In Balochistan Assembly, Zardari got 47 votes and Achakzai 0 votes. In the National Assembly and Senate, Zardari got 255 votes and Achakzai secured 119 votes. One vote was rejected.

Zardari contested the presidential election with the support of the ruling coalition partners – PPP, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP). On the other hand, Achakzai was backed by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its coalition partner in the parliament, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
